Ten frames for early number sense

The standard tool for seeing a number as five and some more. Two tasks: count what is drawn, or add counters to reach a target — which is how making ten gets taught.

  • Counters always fill the top row first, as the model intends
  • Two task types: count it, or make it
  • Four frames across a page, more at packed spacing
  • Matching answer key

  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Grades this covers

Why a ten frame and not just a pile of dots

A ten frame is two rows of five, and that shape is the entire point. After a few weeks a child stops counting the counters and starts seeing 8 as a full row of five plus three, or as two short of ten. That is the beginning of number sense, and it is what makes the make-ten addition strategy possible later.

A random scattering of eight dots teaches counting, one dot at a time, every time. Eight in a ten frame teaches structure, and structure is what a child can still use when the numbers get too big to count.

Both directions matter

Reading a frame and writing the number is the easy direction. Being given a number and having to fill the frame is harder, and it is the one that tells you what a child really has. If they see the structure, they fill the top row without hesitating.

Both appear on these sheets, and the harder setting weights towards the second.

Questions

What is a ten frame for?

It shows a number as a position in a group of ten, so a child sees that seven is five and two more without counting from one.

What does the challenge setting change?

It switches the task: some counters are already drawn and the child draws more to reach the target number.
