Fill in the missing number in the sequence

Number sequences with one value removed. The step size grows with difficulty, so the same skill carries a Kindergarten learner counting by ones and a Grade 4 learner counting by tens.

  • Five-number sequences with one blank
  • The blank is never the first or last number
  • Step size follows the difficulty setting
  • Matching answer key

What’s on the sheet

  • Five-number sequences with exactly one blank
  • A blank that is never the first or last number in the row
  • Step sizes of 1, 2, 5 or 10 depending on difficulty
  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

Count by 1, one step at a time.

Just right

Count by 1, 2 or 5.

Extra challenge

Count by 2, 5 or 10 across the extended range.

The blank never sits at the end

If the missing number sits at the end, a child can answer it by adding the step to the number before. That is a useful skill. It is not the one a sequence sheet is meant to build. They never have to look at the pattern as a whole.

Putting the gap in the middle forces the child to read in both directions and check that their answer fits the numbers on either side. It is a small design decision that changes what the page actually practises.

This is where skip counting starts

Counting by twos, fives and tens is the foundation the times tables are built on, and it is far easier to learn as a pattern in a row of numbers than as a chant. The medium and challenge settings step through exactly those intervals.

A child who can fill 15, 20, __, 30, 35 without counting on their fingers has most of the five times table already, whether or not they would say so.

Questions

Is this the same as skip counting?

It covers it. The medium and challenge settings count by 2s, 5s and 10s, which is skip counting with a gap to fill.

Where does the blank appear?

Always in one of the middle three positions, so there is context on both sides to reason from.
