What’s on the sheet

  • Problems built from a divisor and a whole-number quotient, so every answer is exact
  • Divisors and quotients to 5, 10 or 12 by difficulty
  • 8 to 48 problems per page in framed answer boxes
  • A matching, numbered answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Why there are no remainders here

Division arrives in Grade 3 as the inverse of multiplication: if 4 × 6 is 24, then 24 ÷ 6 is 4. A child meeting that idea does not also need to handle what happens when it will not divide evenly. That is a second concept. Mix the two and a wrong answer could have come from either one.

Every problem here starts from a divisor and a whole-number answer, multiplied together. The exact answer is guaranteed by the way the question was built, not by filtering bad ones out afterwards.

Division facts are multiplication facts, examined

If a child is slow on division facts, the useful diagnosis is almost always shaky multiplication facts. Print a dense page of division and a dense page of multiplication over the same factor range and compare how long each takes.

If the multiplication page is also slow, that is where the fortnight of practice should go. The division will come along behind it without needing separate work.

Questions

Are there remainders?

No. Every division problem is built from a divisor and a whole-number quotient, so the answer is always exact.

Which grades is this suitable for?

Grades 3 to 5. Division is not offered below Grade 3.
