Read the clock and write the time

Analog clock faces drawn as vectors, with a line under each to write the time. The gentle setting shows only the quarter numerals, so a child meeting a clock face is not reading twelve numbers at once.

  • Hour and minute hands drawn to the correct angle, including the hour hand's drift
  • Minute ticks appear once the times need them
  • Four clocks across a page
  • Matching answer key

What’s on the sheet

  • Analogue clock faces with proper tick marks and correctly proportioned hands
  • Times to the hour, half hour, five minutes or the minute, by difficulty
  • 4 to 12 clocks per page
  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

O'clock and half past, on a clock showing only 12, 3, 6 and 9.

Just right

Adds quarter past and quarter to, with all twelve numerals and minute ticks.

Extra challenge

Any five-minute interval.

Grades this covers

The hour hand is the one children get wrong

At 3:45 the hour hand is nearly at the 4, and a child reading the number it is closest to will say quarter to five. The minute hand is the easy one; the hour hand moves continuously and that is the idea the whole skill turns on.

The clock faces here draw the hour hand in its true position rather than parked on the number. A clock that cheats teaches a child to read a clock that does not exist.

A sensible order to work through

O'clock and half past first, which most children get in a week. Then quarter past and quarter to, where the language stops matching the numbers. Then five-minute intervals, which need the five times table. Then the minute.

Each of those is a difficulty setting here, so you can hold at one stage until it is genuinely automatic rather than moving on when the workbook does.

Questions

Does the hour hand move between numbers?

Yes. At half past three it sits halfway between 3 and 4, exactly as a real clock does — that detail is what makes the skill transfer.

What order should we work through the settings?

O'clock and half past first, then quarters, then five-minute intervals. The settings follow that order.
