Days, months and dates

Calendar facts rather than a particular calendar: the questions give the same answer in March as in November. Nothing here depends on today's date, which is also why the worksheet is the same every time you print it from the same link.

  • Never asks what today is, so a printed sheet does not go stale
  • Counting on across weeks: 12 days after Tuesday
  • Month lengths and ordinal positions
  • Matching, numbered answer key

What’s on the sheet

  • Questions about days, months, ordinal dates and reading a month grid
  • Fixed facts rather than today's date, so a printout does not expire
  • 4 to 12 questions per page
  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

Days of the week, and counting on within a week.

Just right

Months, their order, and how many days each has.

Extra challenge

Ordinals, seasons, and counting on across a week boundary.

Nothing on this sheet depends on today

A calendar worksheet that asks what the date is next Tuesday is wrong by the time it comes out of the printer drawer. Every question here is built on fixed facts — how many days are in March, which day the fourteenth falls on in the printed month grid, what comes after Wednesday.

That is the difference between a sheet you can print a stack of and one you have to regenerate every morning.

Ordinal words are a language skill hiding in a math topic

First, second, third, twelfth, twentieth — these are irregular, and children who count perfectly well will say twoth. Calendar work is where most children meet ordinals often enough to fix them, which is a reason to do it even for a child who already knows the days of the week.

The harder settings lean on the ordinals rather than on the arithmetic for exactly that reason.

Questions

Why is February always 28 days?

Leap years would make the answer depend on the year, and a worksheet with no year on it cannot ask that fairly.

Which grades is this for?

Grades 1 to 4. Days of the week suit Grade 1; ordinals and seasons suit Grades 3 and 4.
