Match the activity to its time

Telling the time is only useful once a time means something. This pairs clock times with the parts of a day a child already knows, and the activities are drawn from a real day in order, so the matching also rehearses what comes first.

  • A plausible day: breakfast is never at three in the afternoon
  • Activities drawn as vectors, so no reading is needed on the left
  • The answer key names each pair rather than drawing a line
  • Matching answer key

Time means more when it is attached to something

8:00 is abstract. 8:00 is breakfast is not. Matching times to the parts of a day a child already knows gives the numbers something to hold on to. For a child who has been struggling with a bare clock face, this is usually the version that clicks.

It also quietly builds the sense of duration — that school is a long time and brushing teeth is a short one — which is the foundation elapsed time will need later.

AM and PM come from here

The reason 7 o'clock can be two different things is nearly impossible to explain in the abstract and obvious once a child is sorting breakfast from dinner. These sheets put both halves of the day on the same page for that reason.

It is worth asking which activities could plausibly happen at either time. Most children enjoy the argument.

Questions

Why does the order of the day matter?

Each group is a consecutive window of a real day, so a child can reason from what happens next as well as from the clock.

Does my child need to read the clock first?

It helps, but the times are written as digits, so this works as a first step before analog clock reading.
