Place value: tens, ones and beyond

Break a number into its places, and on the challenge setting work back the other way from the parts to the number. The number of places follows the grade, so Grade 1 never meets hundreds.

  • Places follow the grade as well as the difficulty
  • Zero places are left out, so 402 reads as 4 hundreds + 2 ones
  • The challenge setting works in both directions
  • Matching, numbered answer key

What’s on the sheet

  • Questions asking for the value of a digit, or for a number built from its parts
  • Two, three or four digit numbers depending on the grade
  • 8 to 24 questions per page
  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

Two digits — tens and ones.

Just right

Three digits — hundreds, tens and ones.

Extra challenge

Four digits, alternating between splitting a number and building one.

Grades this covers

Tap a grade you can use for a page of everything a child that age can practise here.

Place value is what makes everything else work

Carrying, borrowing, comparing numbers, rounding, and eventually decimals all depend on one idea: the position of a digit tells you what it is worth. A child who is fluent with that finds column arithmetic obvious. A child who is not will learn the steps and forget them over the summer.

When multi-digit arithmetic goes wrong in Grade 3 or 4, this is usually where the repair work belongs, even though it looks like a Grade 1 topic.

Both directions, again

Reading 347 and saying there are 4 tens is one skill. Being told 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 7 ones and writing 347 is another. The second is where children who have memorised a pattern come unstuck, especially when a place is empty and the answer needs a zero.

The harder settings include numbers with zeros in the middle for exactly that reason.

Questions

How are zeros handled?

A place with zero in it is omitted, so 402 is written as 4 hundreds + 2 ones rather than including an empty tens place.

What does the challenge setting add?

It alternates direction: half the questions give the number and ask for the parts, half give the parts and ask for the number.
