Count the coins, write the total

Coins are drawn as circles with their value printed inside. A line drawing of a dime and a penny are the same circle at worksheet size, so printing the value keeps the task arithmetic — skip counting — rather than a guessing game.

  • One denomination per question, so it really is skip counting
  • Totals over a dollar are written as $1.35, under as 65¢
  • Values printed on the coins, so nothing is guessed from a drawing
  • Matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Just right

Adds dimes, up to eight coins.

Extra challenge

Adds quarters and up to ten coins, so totals run past a dollar.

Grades this covers

Tap a grade you can use for a page of everything a child that age can practise here.

Counting coins is harder than counting anything else

Every other counting task a child meets treats objects as worth one each. Coins do not: a small silver disc can be worth ten of a large copper one, which contradicts the size-means-more instinct children spend their first six years building.

That is why money sheets are worth doing separately rather than being folded into addition practice — the difficulty is in the coins, not the arithmetic.

Sort, then count on

The strategy worth teaching is to start with the highest-value coin and count on from there: a quarter, then 35, 45, 50, 51, 52. Children left to their own devices usually add the coins in the order they appear on the page and lose track.

The harder settings mix more denominations precisely so that the ordering strategy becomes necessary rather than optional.

Questions

Why not draw real coins?

At the size a worksheet prints them, a penny and a dime are the same circle. Printing the value keeps the child counting rather than squinting.

Are there mixed handfuls of coins?

Not yet — every question uses one denomination, which is what makes it skip counting. Mixed groups are a planned addition.
