Column subtraction with room to borrow

Vertical subtraction with a band above each problem for the regrouped digit. The gentle setting is verified borrow-free column by column, so a child meets the layout before the harder step.

  • Answers are never negative at any grade
  • Gentle problems are checked borrow-free digit by digit
  • A faint band above each problem for regrouping
  • Matching, numbered answer key

What’s on the sheet

  • Problems set out vertically with room above the top number to cross out and re-mark
  • Four problems per row, twelve per page at everyday spacing
  • Never a negative result, at any grade or difficulty
  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

Two digits, and never any borrowing.

Just right

Two digits, borrowing allowed.

Extra challenge

Three digits with borrowing, four at Grade 4 and up.

Grades this covers

Tap a grade you can use for a page of everything a child that age can practise here.

Borrowing needs room to be written down

The whole method depends on crossing out a digit and writing a smaller one above it, then writing a little 1 next door. If the sheet does not leave space for that, the child either writes it illegibly or does it in their head — and doing it in their head is where the errors come from.

The cells on these sheets are sized for the crossing-out. It is the same reason the addition version leaves a carry row: the method is a written method, and a layout that cannot hold the writing breaks it.

One difficulty setting away from a diagnosis

If a child is getting column subtraction wrong, the fastest way to find out whether the problem is borrowing or something else is to print a page of the gentle setting, which never requires regrouping. If that page is clean, the borrowing is the issue and you know what to practise.

If it is not clean, the problem is further back — subtraction facts, or place value — and more column practice will not fix it.

Questions

Will my child see a negative answer?

No. The larger number is always on top, so every answer is zero or more.

Can I avoid borrowing entirely?

Yes — the gentle setting only produces problems where every digit on top is at least as large as the one below it.
