A morning routine your kid can follow without you

Every step has a picture next to it, so a child who isn't reading fluently yet can still follow the list on their own instead of asking what's next.

  • An icon next to every step, for pre-readers
  • A default routine for toddlers, kids, and tweens — or write your own steps
  • Times beside each step, or switch them off and keep just the order
  • Free to download, no account needed

You're doing great this week.

What's on the printable

  • Five to seven steps in order, each with a tick box
  • A picture beside every step, so a pre-reader can follow it alone
  • A suggested clock time per step, which you can switch off
  • Your child's name in the title
  • One or two columns, for a short list or a long one

What you can change

  • Edit the step list, or replace it completely
  • One column or two
  • Show the suggested times, or keep just the order
  • Add ruled writing lines underneath, with your own heading
  • Pictures on or off
  • 10 printable styles, or set your own accent color
  • Ink saver mode: no filled headers or shaded rows
  • Rewrite the title, the subtitle and the footer line — or remove them
  • US Letter or A4

How to make yours, in about a minute

  1. 1

Pick the age band closest to your child to load a starter routine.

  2. 2

Reorder or rewrite the steps to match how your mornings actually run.

  3. 3

Turn the times off if you only want the order, or edit them to your bus time.

  4. 4

Print it and tape it at your child's eye level, not yours.

  5. 5

Laminate it and use a dry-erase marker to reuse the same sheet daily.

Why the icons matter

A child who can't yet read the word "toothbrush" can absolutely recognize a drawing of one. That's the entire idea behind a picture routine chart — it's a tool used often in early-childhood classrooms and occupational therapy for exactly this reason, not just a decoration.

Times are optional for the same reason a routine helps at all: some families want "7:00 am, wake up"; others just want the order, with no clock involved.

What's on the default list

The default morning routine runs five to seven steps depending on age: wake up, wash up or get dressed, brush teeth, eat breakfast, and pack a bag, roughly in that order. It's short on purpose — a checklist a child has to scroll through stops being one they'll actually check.

Questions

Can I remove the times and just keep the order?

Yes — write your own steps in the builder and they'll print without times, in the order you list them.

Is this useful for a child with a diagnosed routine or transition need?

Visual step-by-step routines like this one are commonly used for exactly that, alongside autism and sensory-processing support — though this tool doesn't provide medical or therapeutic advice, just a plain, editable printable.

Can I laminate it and reuse the same sheet every day?

Yes — print it once, slip it in a page protector or laminate it, and check items off with a dry-erase marker instead of printing a new one daily.

Is there a bedtime version?

Yes — see the matching bedtime routine checklist.
