Wind down the same way, every night

A bedtime routine works because it's the same steps in the same order every night, not because any single step is special. A printed checklist is what makes that repeatable without a grown-up narrating it each time.

  • An icon next to every step, for pre-readers
  • A default routine for toddlers, kids, and tweens — or write your own steps
  • Times beside each step, or switch them off and keep just the order
  • Free to download, no account needed

You're doing great this week.

What's on the printable

  • Five to seven wind-down steps in order, each with a tick box
  • A picture beside every step, for children who aren't reading yet
  • A suggested time per step, which you can switch off
  • Your child's name in the title
  • Tween steps that swap in packing a bag and screens off

What you can change

  • Edit the step list, or replace it completely
  • One column or two
  • Show the suggested times, or keep just the order
  • Add ruled writing lines underneath, with your own heading
  • Pictures on or off
  • 10 printable styles, or set your own accent color
  • Ink saver mode: no filled headers or shaded rows
  • Rewrite the title, the subtitle and the footer line — or remove them
  • US Letter or A4

How to make yours, in about a minute

  1. 1

Pick the age band closest to your child to load a starter routine.

  2. 2

Put the steps in the order your evenings already run — don't invent a new one.

  3. 3

Switch the times off if bedtime moves around during the week.

  4. 4

Print it and put it where the routine starts, usually the bathroom.

  5. 5

Keep it the same every night; that consistency is what does the work.

Why consistency matters more than the exact steps

It doesn't much matter whether bath comes before or after pajamas — what matters is that it's the same every night. Predictability is what tells a child's body it's time to slow down, and a checklist is a cheap, visible way to enforce that same order without a parent having to repeat it out loud every evening.

It also cuts down on the negotiating. "What's next" is answered by the chart, not by whoever's putting them to bed that night, which matters more than it sounds like on a night when that's not the same person as usual.

What's on the default list

The default routine runs five to seven steps: tidy up, bath or shower, pajamas, brush teeth, a story, and lights out. Older kids' versions swap in more independent steps — packing tomorrow's backpack, screens off — in place of ones a younger child still needs help with.

Questions

Can I add screen time cutoff as a step?

Yes — add it as one of your own steps in the builder; the tween default list already includes a "screens off" step.

Can I use this alongside the morning routine chart?

Yes, they're built to match — see the morning routine checklist.

How many steps should a bedtime routine actually have?

Five to seven is the sweet spot. Fewer than that skips the wind-down; more than that turns bedtime into its own chore nobody wants to do.

Is it free?

Yes, no account or payment, and the PDF has no watermark.
