Check what you have before you buy anything

Most of a school supply list is already in a drawer somewhere in your house. This sheet exists to be walked around the house with a pen before anyone goes to a shop, with two lines at the bottom for what's genuinely missing.

  • Ten to sixteen supplies in two columns, on one page
  • Separate starter lists for preschool, elementary, and middle school
  • Replace it entirely with your school's own supply list
  • Two ruled lines headed "Still to buy"

What's on the printable

  • A two-column checklist with a tick box per supply
  • Age-matched starter lists, from crayons and a nap mat to a calculator and a lock
  • A picture beside every supply
  • A writable "School year ____" line
  • Two ruled lines headed "Still to buy"

What you can change

  • Edit the supply list, or replace it completely
  • One column or two
  • Add ruled writing lines underneath, with your own heading
  • Pictures on or off
  • 10 printable styles, or set your own accent color
  • Ink saver mode: no filled headers or shaded rows
  • Rewrite the title, the subtitle and the footer line — or remove them
  • US Letter or A4

How to make yours, in about a minute

  1. 1

Pick the age band, or clear the list and type in your school's own.

  2. 2

Print it before you shop, not after.

  3. 3

Walk the house and tick everything you already own.

  4. 4

Write what's genuinely missing on the "Still to buy" lines.

  5. 5

Take the sheet shopping — it's the shortlist now, not the full list.

The half of the list you already own

Scissors, rulers, glue sticks and half-used packs of colored pencils accumulate. A supply list handed out in August rarely accounts for that, and the default behaviour is to buy the whole thing again. Ticking off what's already in the house first is the entire saving, and it takes about ten minutes.

The two lines at the bottom are what you actually take to the shop. Everything above them is a record of what you didn't need to buy.

What changes between the age lists

Preschool is mostly consumables and comfort: chunky crayons, glue sticks, a change of clothes, a nap mat. Elementary adds the tools of written work — pencil case, scissors, ruler, notebooks, folders. Middle school shifts again to organisation and independence: a binder with dividers, highlighters, a calculator, a planner, a gym lock, headphones.

When the school sends its own list

Most schools do, and it usually arrives as a wall of text in an email or a photo of a photocopy. Clear this checklist and type theirs in one item per line — you get the same tick boxes, the same two columns, and something a child can help work through instead of a paragraph only an adult can parse.

Questions

Can I use my school's own supply list?

Yes — clear the list and type theirs in, one item per line. The layout and tick boxes stay.

Is there a version for middle school?

Yes, pick the tween age band for a binder, calculator, planner and lock rather than crayons.

Can I print one per child?

Yes — add each child's name and download one sheet each; there's no limit and no account.

Can I print it in black and white?

Yes. Turn on ink saver for a version with no filled colour areas at all, or pick the Minimal style.

Is it free?

Yes, no account or payment, and the PDF has no watermark.
