Handwriting practice on proper primary rules

Real primary rules — a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline, with the model letters sitting on the baseline where a child actually writes them.

  • Trace, copy, or trace-then-copy on every line
  • Green start dots mark where each line begins
  • Recommended words by grade, including letter-formation stroke groups
  • Short text repeats to fill the page, so no practice space is wasted

  • Trace, copy, or trace-then-copy on every line
  • Three-line primary rules in three sizes, with green start dots
  • Recommended word sets by grade, or up to 240 characters of your own text
  • Short text repeated to fill the page, so no practice space is wasted

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

The largest rules, best for Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Just right

The common Grade 1 to 2 size.

Extra challenge

Close to wide-ruled paper, for Grade 3 and up.

Trace, copy, write — and the third one is the test

Tracing builds the movement. Copying, with the model still visible above, builds it with less support. Writing with nothing to follow is the only one that tells you whether it took. All three belong on the same page, in that order, and most cheap handwriting sheets stop after the first.

If the third line is unrecognisable, the child needs more tracing rather than more encouragement.

Practising real words instead of letter strings

Once the letters are formed, the useful practice is words the child will actually write — sight words, word family members, their own sentences. It turns handwriting time into reading and spelling time at no extra cost.

The recommended sets are filtered by grade, starting with letter-formation stroke groups in Kindergarten and moving to Dolch sight words, word families, and full sentences later. Or type your own text and it wraps and repeats to fill the sheet.

Questions

Which words should my child practise?

Pick a recommended set for the grade. Kindergarten starts with letter-formation stroke groups, then Dolch pre-primer sight words; later grades move to word families and full sentences.

Can I use my child's name or my own sentence?

Yes. Choose “My own text” and type anything up to 240 characters; it wraps and repeats to fill the page.
