Beginning sounds: tick the letter it starts with

The first phonics skill after letter names, and one a child can do before they can read: name the picture, hear the first sound, tick the letter. Words whose first letter is not their first sound are left out entirely, so the answer key is never arguable.

  • No reading needed — the picture is the whole prompt
  • Digraph words like “ship” are excluded, because /sh/ is not /s/
  • Up to 20 pictures on a page
  • Matching answer key

What’s on the sheet

  • Drawn pictures with a choice of starting letters to circle
  • Sounds chosen so the answer is unambiguous when the picture is named
  • 4 to 12 pictures per page, at roomy spacing
  • A matching answer key

What each difficulty means

Difficulty is a real change to the numbers or the layout, not a label.

Gentle start

Two letters to choose between, far apart in the alphabet.

Just right

Three letters.

Extra challenge

Four letters, including one that is easy to confuse with the answer.

The child names the picture in their head

A phonics sheet for a child who cannot read yet has to be answerable without reading, which is why these pages are built on pictures rather than printed words. The child looks at the drawing, says the word silently or aloud, listens to the front of it, and circles the letter.

That listening step is the whole skill. Everything about learning to read in the first year rests on being able to hear that sun and sock start the same way.

Why the pictures are drawn, not photographed

Every picture in these worksheets is vector line art drawn into the PDF, so it prints sharply in black and white on a school printer, uses very little ink, and keeps the file small. A photo would print as a grey smudge on the same printer.

It also keeps the drawings clear. A simple drawing of a cat is a cat. A photograph of one particular cat invites a child to answer kitten, or pet, or the name of their own cat.

Questions

What age is this for?

Pre-K through Grade 1, roughly ages 4 to 6 — as soon as a child knows some letter names.

Why are some words missing?

Words like “ship” and “chair” start with a digraph, so their first sound is not their first letter. Asking about them would teach the wrong thing, so they are excluded.
